BEFORE & AFTER

The Brief

To improve storage, benchtop space, correct the workflow within the kitchen, allow for the addition of a small freestanding table (so that there was potential for an interaction zone) by the client and improve the aesthetic to soften the kitchen and make it more homely yet complement the brutalistic mid century architecture of the apartment building and surrounds in Brunswick, Victoria.

The Transformation

Layout

Moving the fridge closest to the entry door, utilizing drawers within pantry to increase usable storage yet reduce the pantry’s foot print allowed us to reconfigure the kitchen onto only 2 walls, making the kitchen feel more spacious and allowing the addition of a free standing table by the client.

Storage

Use of drawers in pantry and in base cabinetry drive storage effectiveness as it increases access and capacity efficiency.

Workflow

Having distinct space for preparation adjacent the cooktop and separating cooktop and sink areas improve workflow and better allow for multi person participation within the kitchen.

Aesthetic

Use of green (insert actual colour from spec) laminate to cabinetry doors, ply open shelves and benchtop edge with a clean with laminate benchtop create a warm, earthy yet clean look and feel and the exotic tiles make a huge statement that is in keeping with the desired aesthetic, the taste of the client and the era of the home. Graphite handles soften what could be hard black and are reminiscent of the industrial history of the area … but all in a way that is not formulaic.
